Kokusai the Genius and Stag-antler Carving in Japan

3rd - 12th November, 2016

Sydney L. Moss Ltd. will be exhibiting works from its new set of publications on Kokusai, the eccentric storyteller and carver of stag-antler who epitomised life in downtown Tokyo in the mid to late 19th century, as Japan found itself transitioning between the shogunal rule of the Edo period and the new, westernised, Meiji era.

In addition to works by Kokusai, the gallery will also have works in stag-antler by his antecedents and refined works by those who followed, and were influenced by, the Genius of Stag-antler Carving.

During this period the walls of the gallery will show a selection of Japanese hanging scrolls representing painting and calligraphy.

Kokusai The Genius

and Stag-antler Carving in Japan

From May 2016 Sydney L. Moss Ltd. will be celebrating the great Meiji carver Kokusai with the largest ever exhibition of his works including netsuke, pipe cases, sceptres, and more. For context we display many precursors to his work in the form of seals and other early carvings in stag-antler and other materials. We also show other works made in homage to the master and the work of his many successful followers including Masayuki, Rensai, Hakusai, Tokoku, and many others all the way to the great early twentieth century stag-antler carver Oshin.

More than 550 pieces will be on display, with over a third available for sale, until at least the seventh of June.

literary lacquers

5th - 14th November, 2015.

Sydney L. Moss Ltd. is mounting an exhibition of suzuribako in conjunction with 'literary lacquers', a new publication of a selection of superfine lacquer boxes by artists such as Ogawa Haritsu, Mochizuki Hanzan and Shirayama Shōsai to name a few.

In conjunction with our literary lacquers display we are mounting a small and special group of 10 superlative chaire from an old European collection. These ceramic tea caddies are the handpicked few kept back for the collection from a whittling down from more than 120 pieces some twenty years ago.

Generally taking the shape of a small ceramic jar with an ivory lid, chaire are classified on the basis of the kiln in which they were produced and which of the wide array of forms that they take. Chaire hold the powdered tea used in the making of koicha, or thick tea, in the cha no yu tea ceremony and have pride of place as that ceremony’s most important fired objects, ahead of even Cha wan (tea bowls) – according to A.L Sadler’s 1962 book “Cha-no-yu: The Japanese Tea Ceremony”:

“The most important pottery of the Cha-no-yu is first the Cha-ire and then the Cha-wan. It is said that among the military class the most precious possessions were first Tea-caddies, second writings and third swords. For this was the order in which they were presented by the Shogun to one he desired to honour.”

Huangbo / Ōbaku crosscultural calligraphy

8th – 20th September 2014

We look forward to showing you our impressive haul of calligraphy and painting from this recently neglected field of endeavour, which includes more than its fair share of special works; some famous, others unheard-of. Copies of the exhibition’s very beautiful book will arrive in New York, logistics permitting, by the 8th; it is worth studying quietly, before, during and after the event. The 49 works of art include a few paintings and a large teapot, but essentially the focus is on calligraphy, most of it - though varied enough - in hanging scroll format. We will go to some lengths to ensure that the display is relatively spare, on the principle of “less is more”; calligraphies not on display will be shown upon request. We also plan to bring related non-exhibition works.

Professor Steve Addiss has contributed a very fine essay, as well as a few memorable stars from his own collection, last shown in his 1978 Ōbaku exhibition and publication. Patricia Graham has contributed a comprehensive essay on Ōbaku and sencha (the Chinese-style steeped tea ceremony, effectively introduced to Japan by early immigrant Chinese monks); and Paul Moss adds a more personal introduction, setting out his ideas of what Chinese calligraphy in Japan in the seventeenth century was all about. The hardback book comprises 240 pages, with 121 colour illustrations, a seals appendix and so forth. Its state-of-the-art presentation is such that even non-enthusiasts will begin to get an appreciative clue of what the powerful dynamics and modulated subtleties of old Chinese-Japanese calligraphy entail.

2010 Exhibitions

Elly Nordskog and Centenary Exhibits

From November 2010, Sydney L. Moss Ltd. has two Japanese exhibitions on view, in celebration of the company's centenary year.

The first is a wide array of sagemono from well-known Californian collector Elly Nordskog. Her meticulously selected inrō, ojime and netsuke ensembles, as well as her remarkable pipecase collection, are on display, accompanied by our latest, and most lavish, Japanese catalogue celebrating the collection, ‘They Are All Fire and Every One Doth Shine’.

Alongside Elly Nordskog’s collection, works from our soon-to-be-published centenary catalogue ‘100 Years of Beatitude’ are also displayed. This exhibition includes paintings, sculpture, lacquer and selected sagemono with a focus on the underrated master Ogawa Haritsu (1663 - 1747).

Euronetsuke

London Netsuke Symposium

5th to 8th November 2010

The symposium will be held at Dartmouth House in Charles Street, Mayfair,  home of the English Speaking Union, and will coincide with the annual Asian Art in London week. There will be a full programme of lectures and workshops by  familiar and less familiar speakers and hopefully some presentations that will provoke lively discussion and general participation. In the afternoons you will be able to browse the exhibitions of participating UK and international dealers.

Very competitively priced rooms have been reserved for symposium delegates at the Washington Mayfair Hotel, a moment's walk away from Dartmouth House. The newly modernised hotel offers comfortable accommodation with free wifi in every room and is ideally located for the restaurants and pubs of historic Shepherds Market, close to Green Park tube, Piccadilly and Bond Street. Twenty years have passed since the last London netsuke convention and for several delegates this will be their first such event.

Capacity at the English Speaking Union is limited, so we urge you to make early reservation in order to avoid disappointment. Registration forms can be found at the euronetsuke website.
