OGAWA HARITSU (RITSUO)
(1663 - 1747)

An important Japanese wood bunko or ryoshibako (document box) superbly inlaid using a bewildering variety of materials with a scene of the greatest of Chinese calligraphers, Wang Hsi-chih (in Japanese O Gishi, 303 - 379), seated holding a fan at his desk on a terrace as an attendant grinds ink on a tall root stand. Wang Hsi-chih is said to have modelled the flow of his calligraphy on the elegant necks of geese, and to have modulated the rise and fall of his brush strokes according to their wing motions.

Seal: Kan, inlaid in green pottery.
