Aoki Mokubei

A pottery chaire (tea caddy) of cylindrical form with green, blue and rust stripe design on a cream crackle ground. Ivory lid. Inscribed to one side with the underglaze ink signature Aoki Mokubei.
Early nineteenth century.

Diameter: 1 3/4 inches; 4.5 cm.
Height: 3 3/8 inches; 8.5 cm.

Ex collection R. B. Caldwell, Dallas.
Mokubei, together with Nin'ami Dohachi (1783-1833) and Eiraku Hozen (1795-1854) is known as one of the three famous Kyoto art potters of his days.
