Mask Musozutsu, tessai
Signed: Tessai tsukuru with kaō.
Nara or Tokyo, late 19th - early 20th century
Length: 22 cm.
This musōzutsu depicts images of three masks: a Tengu mask, and two oni masks. Presumably one of each mask is in one of the three temples mentioned.
Hōryū-ji – the most major of the three temples mentioned here – and Yakushi-ji host the oni masks, leaving Gangō-ji with the Tengu mask. These three temples are part of the Nanto shichi daiji [南都七大寺], “The seven great temples of Nara”.
