Inking Identity: Calligraphy of the Obaku School

31st October - 30th November, 2019

Monday to Friday 10am - 5:30pm

In the 17th century, a sudden intersection of two Buddhist sects produced a unique phenomenon – the Obaku School. The collision of Chinese Linji (Jp: Rinzai) monks with their theoretical counterpart in Japan bred a hybrid Zen sect, now referred to as Obaku. Sydney L. Moss will exhibit a selection of scrolls and screens by Obaku calligraphers, whose fascinating fusion of customs and culture belonged to both – and neither – nations.

The exhibition extends beyond Asian Art in London until 30th November 2019, and includes a wide range of Japanese sagemono and lacquer, and classical Chinese paintings.
